A crude and somewhat forced example. Visualization on how the tunguska meteor "skipped" off our atmosphere (blue shades) as the air got thicker at lower altitudes... The trees were flattened by the shock wave (green) and the ground was never struck. (brown) Meanwhile the actual meteor bounced back upward without ever striking the ground, and either flung back into space or burned up from the heat.
