The Chevrolet Spark is an A-segment passenger car, originally marketed as the Daewoo Matiz, produced by the South Korean manufacturer GM Daewoo from 1998 to August 2022. It is a five-seater, initially only with a three-cylinder transverse front engine, traction front, an economical dependent rear suspension and a five-door body. Its design was based on the Italdesign Lucciola12 prototype designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro originally projected as a future replacement for the Fiat Cinquecento.
Originally known as "Daewoo Matiz", the "Chevrolet Matiz" nomenclature was applied from the year 2000 depending on the market. It was developed on the basis of the Daewoo Tico with which it shares mechanics and suspensions, a licensed version of the Suzuki Alto, from which derives its characteristic width dimension imposed by the Japanese "Kei car" fiscal category, which exempts the need to discard parking space. With the imminent bankruptcy of Daewoo, this brand is reserved for the South Korean market, and the model became known as a product of other brands of the American industrial group General Motors, with the second generation already being sold as Chevrolet Matiz (Europe and Mexico), Chevrolet Spark (North and South America) and Matiz G2 (Mexico). The third generation was released in 2009 as the new Spark; while in Chile, Colombia and Mexico, when it began marketing in 2010, it is known as Spark GT.3
The original styling of the Matiz received some cosmetic changes in the 2000 (M150). For 2009, the Matiz is produced by a number of manufacturers who have a license on the design of the vehicle. Some of these manufacturers include Formosa Automobile Corp. in Taiwan and Chevrolet, who has renamed the car the Spark and sells it in Europe, South America, and Asia.4
An all-electric version, the Chevrolet Spark EV, was launched in the United States in June 2013. The Spark EV is the first all-electric passenger car marketed by General Motors since the EV1 in 1999. |
