just to make it clear, i pretty much uploaded this to show the new guys a simple way to make an elevator. you are free to use this elevator in any of your scenes, and dont complain that it sucks, because its only meant to show a simple elevator

to get the spiky shaft, make a rectangle, and gearify it (geometry options)
