 | On April 4th 1975, a Lockheed C-5 Galaxy participating in "Operation Babylift" crashed during an emergency landing at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in the country of South Vietnam, the cause was described to be an explosive decompression due to the tail's cargo door failing and breaking apart, causing the tail to be exposed. During the approach to Runway 25L, the plane's descent rate suddenly began to increase rapidly, the crew increased the throttle to the engines in hopes of being able to save the aircraft, but the plane touched down in a rice paddy at 4:45 PM, and skidded for 400 meters (a quarter of a mile), became airborne for half a mile (800 meters), crossing the Saigon River, then hit a dike and broke up into four pieces. The fuel caught fire and some of the wreckage was set ablaze. 138 of the passengers passed away, while 176 remained injured but managed to survive off a total of 285 passengers, including babies.update: added grass.
