The Magnus effect is the lateral force exerted on a rotating body when it moves through a fluid. This force is perpendicular to both the velocity vector
v of the center of mass and the axis of rotation ω. The phenomenon was described experimentally by Heinrich-Gustav Magnus (1852), following preliminary observations by Robins and theoretical analyses by Rayleigh.
