Doing this on a 6 x 4 rectangle usually creates the illusion that you can do this WITHOUT affecting the rectangle's area, while actually it does, but only minutely, therefore being really hard to notice. This proves, however, that it does INDEED change its area.
You can do this with other rectangles, I believe. The wider the rectangle, the less it will be noticeable.
