Oh, how technology evolves! We began with mechanical systems similar but not identical to this, and now we have technology that can even simulate such archaic machines!
Btw, you just may have been outdone... http://www.algodoo.com/algobox/details.php?id=233381 is a laser based system I designed over the course of a weekend, and an x-bit adder can complete a full addition of any two x-bit numbers in x frames.
