Beta type stirling engine. The top piston is the power piston, the bottom piston is the displacer piston. The displacer piston displaces the air so that the air moves from the hot side to the cold side of the engine. When the air is allowed to go to the hot side, it gains energy and expands which pushes the power piston upward. The displacer then moves downward which causes the air to move to the cold side (fins). The air then cools and contracts which causes the power piston to move downward (assisted by the momentum of the flywheel). The cycle then continues.
