I had another idea.

The hat was probably possessed by a ghost at the mansion and that one hat that Teal picked up was the hat. It must've slowly been taking over Teal. Until, now where Teal eventually fell over, the hat probably turned that new color because the ghost has taken control over Teal. Possessed Teal then got up and said that he was OK so that way they he wouldn't become suspicious.
