_____ I WANT YOU ______
TO BUILD BEST TANK EVER!

Our Algodoo military needs best main battle tank in the world for mass production!

Your tank must fit following requirements:
  1. Must have continuous track(s) driven by two or more wheels (one or more caterpillars)
  2. Must use our 1000hp turbo-diesel engine (gearbox design is yours)
  3. Must use our 125mm smooth-bore tank gun (top secret, you'll get non-shooting model of it with recoil simulation only), able to shoot -5 +15 deg angle (mount it on turret)
  4. Must be operated by crew of 2 men (simple place 2 manikins inside)
  5. Tank length (without gun) from 5 to 8 m, height from 1.5 to 3 m
  6. Tank weight must be ~50 tons (+/- 5 tons max)
  7. Must be easy to produce (less than 1000 entities)
  8. Must move and look better than everything we saw before (but with gradient textures only)!

Winner will get a contract for tank production
(scene will be on Algodoo featured scenes page)
and an Algodoo military t-shirt!

Best tank will be chosen based on following criteria (score):
  1. Max road speed - 1 point for every m/s above 7m/s (10 max)
  2. Max off-road speed (on our test area) - 1 point for every m/s above 3.5m/s (10 max)
  3. Max elevation angle - 1 point for every degrees above 30deg (10 max)
  4. Max gap pass - 1 point for every 0.1m after 3m (10 max)
  5. Max wall height pass - 1 point for every 0.1m after 1m (15 max)
  6. Good gun stabilization (up to 20 points)
  7. Good gearbox with reverse (up to 20 points)
  8. Additional weapons, double gun (up to 20 points)
  9. Good suspension (up to 20 points)
  10. Well-planned interior - enough space for crew, fuel tanks, ammo, other equipment but small profile (up to 20 points)
  11. Best, realistic looks in military style (up to 50 points)
  12. Max score gained from our test area (every obstacle pass add 10 points, 70 points max)
  13. No lags, no chain stretch, good reliability on 100Hz (up to 30 points)

Basic tech limitations:
  1. Friction 0-1 (+inf allowed for gearbox only)
  2. Restitution 0-1
  3. Track chain collide set A
  4. Body collide set B
  5. Engine motor hinge 500rpm, 16000Nm or 320rpm, 25000Nm
  6. No additional motors in transmission, no other propulsion devices
  7. Stretchable hinges (hingeConstant not NaN) usage in transmission are limited - only fixed shaft drive allowed.
  8. No any unrealistic devices (such +inf inertiaMultiplier, thrusters, pos/vel changers etc)
  9. Any script allowed if it doesn't break physics law
  10. Allowed sim frequency 60-120
  11. Only textures allowed is gradients from that pack
  12. Allowed Algodoo version 2.0.1 or later (I recommend 2.1.0 beta, last version here)

Apply to contest and you will be provided with technical details (engine and gun phunlets, size patterns, collide sets rules, material limitations, allowed scripts, etc.)
PM me if you got any question!

Test area description (7 zones):
  1. Swamp
  2. Sand
  3. Gravel
  4. Hills
  5. Rocks
  6. Ramp
  7. secret zone

Contest ending date: 17 march 2013.
Good luck to you, engineer!

Engine phunlets (must be placed inside the tank, collide set may be changed to anything):

Filesize: 37.9 kB
download

Filesize: 17.3 kB
download

Gun phunlet, it doesn't shoot yet, just simulate recoil (no collideSet change allowed), must be placed on turret, stabilized and able to shoot from -5 to +15 angle to horizon:

Filesize: 5.41 kB
download

Crew manikins (you must fit them comfortably inside the tank, adjust body parts position as you need):

Filesize: 30.04 kB
download

You can re-color, decorate, add details to it as you wish.

I've change some ruels:
  • No density limits
  • Two fixed combination of motor hinge power/torque allowed (both 800kW or >1000hp)
  • Add new criteria - gearbox
  • Gradient textures allowed
  • Stretched hinges allowed (with some limitation)

I think of hinge shaft drive and decide to allow it with some limitation. :geek:
So you ALLOWED to use stretchable hinges but if it act as a shaft drive in transmission (connected to wheel) - it must be with fixed ends. So you can't put that on wheel if it not fixed to tank corpse. That gives you tech for gearbox/transmission but disallow to make simple unrealistic AWD tank.

I have a better idea for test track!

It will be secret until contest end. So you must be prepared for everything and don't know your tank score till final date. I'll just describe you that area, that's fair. 8-)

7 test zones (20-30 meters of some obstacles, every passed +10 points ):
  1. Swamp (soft ground)
  2. Sand (small particles)
  3. Gravel (medium particles hill)
  4. Hills (high climb and down angles)
  5. Rocks (you'll need to ram it)
  6. Ramp (speed up and jump)
  7. secret zone

Does the Polygon limit include the treads?

Yes, all entities count. But I can increase it to 1000 I think (since Algodoo 2.1 much faster).

p.s. Best track chain still need some tweaks: no autoBend, legacyMode=0, high density, small autobrake.

Alright Killinich, I suppose I'm back. Not sure why you remembered me or where you found my email address, though. My new computer doesn't disagree with the newest version of Minecraft like my old one did, and I think I might be getting tired of Minecraft. I kinda miss Algodoo and look forward to seeing if anything has changed. Forums are looking kinda quiet these days, huh?

This isn't my favorite kind of vehicle contest, but I'll bite. Might even actually make it pretty.

Test entry, I'll not apply but makes sure it's possible to get max score and gives you an ideas how to archive that!

I hardly recommend to set sim.frequency=120
Track chain works much better with it. It's safe, stored with scene and not affect other scenes.

I'd assume not.

now I'm starting to remember how much I hate treads and why. Complex hinge arrangements don't really agree with Algodoo 2.1 either. My prototype is experiencing rigid track hinges, exploding randomly, floating in the air, things like that. So is another semi-secret project, except that one makes Algodoo crash when it blows up. As much as I want to tell myself I'm not going to bother with this mess, I think I'll end up submitting something decent in the end.

PS STOP EXPLODING WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU STUPID TANK

Frank, you could use my track chains as an example. Add density, set legacyMode = 0, add small brake and that's all.

Oops, now I see that you already said that. I got my prototype working. Does it have to look like a tank, or does it just need to function like one?

I find the engine powerful enough for the purpose. There are problems when reaching higher speeds, the track is less stable and begin to wobble, the track drive gear begins to rotate too fast for 120 Hz. Anyway, already at this point I think I have good results: >10 m/s max speed, >50° ramp up/down and a decent suspension. Will see.
