My interpretation:
when you try to move backwards, the tiny blue circle wedges the orange poly into the balls and into the blue which somehow stops if from rotating due to friction of tha balls?

The orange and blue poly are (2) wedges. Orange poly has friction against the gray shaft. Blue poly has friction against the green ring. The balls provide a frictionless interface between the (2) wedges. The wedges and balls act like an intermediate ring that changes thickness based on rotation direction. The tiny blue circle provides a limit to the relative motion between the wedges. The tiny blue circles can be deleted, and the device will still work.
